Synergizing Strengths: Uniting Professions for Strategic Impact

The National Academies of Practice (NAP) invites you to submit abstracts for their educational sessions (oral presentations, roundtables, workshops, and posters) at the 2024 NAP Annual Meeting and Forum, which seeks to promote collaboration across and among individuals engaged in interprofessional practice within clinical, educational, scholarship, and/or policy settings. The Forum is designed to empower individuals and collaborative teams, with emphasis on the following topic areas: 

Social Determinants of Health	Interprofessional Policy and Health Advocacy
Population Health and Health Equity	Leadership and Innovation in Interprofessional Practice and Education
Behavioral Health and Wellbeing	Translating Interprofessional Scholarship to Practice and Education

We encourage the submission of abstracts that reflect the interprofessional nature of the National Academies of Practice for the 2024 Forum. Examples of collaborative efforts include (but are not limited to):

• Ongoing or completed research among an interdisciplinary team of investigators
• Educational models, courses, and/or offerings that focus on multiple disciplines in a collaborative environment
• Development or implementation of practice models that involve cooperation among healthcare disciplines
• Healthcare policy that addresses issues surrounding collaborative practice, education, or scholarship
  
  

Topic Areas
Social Determinants of Health
Some examples may include:

• Exploring the roles and responsibilities of professionals in understanding the impact of the neighborhood and build environment on health.
• Addressing the social needs of patients through the knowledge, skills, and abilities of interprofessional teams.
• Focusing on health access and quality for diverse populations.

Population Health and Health Equity
Some examples may include:

• Addressing the factors affecting population health and health equity (e.g., discrimination, healthcare access, race, education, income, environment).
• Developing interprofessional strategies/programs to address population health and health equity.
• Addressing the impact of workforce shortages on healthcare.

Behavioral Health and Wellbeing
Some examples may include:

• Developing interprofessional strategies/programs for health and wellbeing.
• Training to address skill building when working with people with psychiatric disabilities or behavioral health issues.
• Addressing behavioral health equity as a right of all individuals, regardless of race, age, ethnicity, gender, disability, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, or geographic location.

Interprofessional Policy and Health Advocacy
Some examples may include:

• Focusing on collaborative approaches to healthcare and policy.
• Focusing on advocacy training through interprofessional education.
• Providing the knowledge and skills to effectively advocate for policy change.
• Advocating for legislation to support workforce shortages, particularly the 2021 Allied Health Workforce Diversity Act (HR 3320/S 1679), that supports recruitment of students from underrepresented backgrounds.

Leadership and Innovation in Interprofessional Practice and Education
Some examples may include:

• Identifying best practices for preparing educators who design interprofessional education experiences.
• Promoting successful interprofessional practice and education through leaders with specific characteristics.
• Exploring innovative ways of understanding and supporting healthcare teams in interprofessional practice.
• Advancing health equity through equity-centered leadership development.

Translating Interprofessional Scholarship to Practice and Education
Some examples may include:

• Implementing research based on interprofessional education or interprofessional collaboration best practices.
• Understanding the effect of healthcare professionals on patient outcomes when they are educated in interprofessional practice and collaboration.
• Advancing health equity in models of interprofessional education.

 

Selection Criteria

• Interprofessional collaboration reflected in authorship (at least 2 disciplines or professions)
  • All professions must be clearly identified 
• Relevance/significance of the topic to one or more of the Forum topic areas (see above)
• Clarity of purpose and specific learning objectives required for each type of educational session
• Appropriate presentation and engagement methods for the type of session selected by presenters
• Fair, inclusive, and comprehensive representation of findings, including lessons learned, potential contributions and/or recommendations for practice, education, scholarship, or policy
• Contemporary contribution to a new or existing body of knowledge
• Novel approach

 

Educational Session Types

• Oral presentations will be 30 minutes. Oral presentations include at least 10 minutes allocated for participant Q&A or other engagement; they may be presented alone or they may be grouped together based on a single theme and similar content for a 60 or 90-minute period.
• Roundtable presentations will be 60 minutes. A roundtable submission addresses an area or issue of fundamental importance to various fields, in a format that encourages active discussion of different perspectives.
• Workshop presentations will be 90 minutes. A workshop is an educational session designed to create a specialized result; often primarily pedagogical, intended to offer training opportunities with hands-on instruction.
• Posters will have two session opportunities. A poster is a presentation of information or research, increasing the possibilities for presenters to communicate ideas or research findings in exciting and dynamic forms.
  
  

Submission Guidelines

Abstracts and session summaries must be free of commercial bias or promotion, and each applicable section (Background/Rationale, Methods/Methodology, Results/Findings/Lessons Learned, and Conclusions/Implications, Facilitation Methods) should be no more than 300 words each. Please enter this information exactly as you would like it to appear in the program materials.

 

Abstract submissions should include the following elements:

• Presentation title
• Identify the topic area of your proposed session
• Identify the educational session type
• Session description (150-word limit)
• Learning Objectives
• Background/Rationale
• Methods/Methodology
• Results/Findings/Lessons Learned
• Conclusions/Implications
• Facilitation Methods (only applicable for roundtables and workshops)
• Description of how the proposed session does or does not address concepts of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
• Identify the IPEC core competencies addressed in your proposed session
• Three (3) contemporary peer-reviewed references from the past 10 years which support your content (not applicable for posters)
• Brief statement of session relevance for participants

The following information should also be included for each presenting and contributing author:

• Full name
• Organization/Institution
• Full credentials
• Profession/discipline/academy
• Position title
• Email address
• Postal address
• Identify the presenting/contributing authors
• Identify the primary author to serve as the contact person who will share information with their co-author(s)
• Narrative biography (150-word limit)
• Description of expertise/experience in the subject matter
• Resume/CV
• Disclosures

Please Note:

• September 18, 2023 at 11:59 PM ET is a firm deadline and will not be extended.
• NAP membership is not a requirement for abstract submission.
• All presenters will be required to register for and attend the Forum. Presenters are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, and registration expenses.
• Notifications will be sent to the primary author for each abstract submission in November 2023.
